50 Euro

Friction – Chapter Six.

Would you take it?

“Ça fait du bien, de transpirer,” said Kamille.

“My late running sessions

they’re the best.”

She was already on her second round in the park.
She sensed she was getting
healthier.

Kamille’s wet skin felt fresh
in the hot weather.

And then
she saw something.

It was intriguing enough
for her to stop.

Right there,
next to the twinkling lamp.

“Oh, 50 euro.” “Someone must have dropped them.”

She looked around
like she was
seeing something
she shouldn’t see.

She hesitated for a breath.

Should she just keep going?
Maybe someone would come back for them.

But 50 euro were hard to ignore.
They could do a lot of things.

Like buy her favorite book
the new hardcover edition.
Not that she couldn’t afford it,
but she found it
a little overpriced.

Or better
a fancy journal with a lock.

The lamp went out.
Kamille startled.
Her heart skipped a beat.

“Non, je ne devrais pas faire ça.” “Ce n’est pas comme si je suis pauvre.”

Maybe a hungry person
would benefit more.

But deep down,
she thought most homeless people
were pretending.

She doubted
they were actually hungry today.

She felt a gram of shame
at the thought.

“Peut-être c’est une blague.” Some kind of caméra cachée.

The street lamp brightened again.
Kamille looked around.
Still alone.

But
what if she was saving someone?

“Oui, quelqu’un pourrait l’utiliserpour acheter un malheur.”

To nourish some wicked need.
A book or a journal
is always better.

Kamille shivered.
She felt cold suddenly.
Probably because she stopped running.
She convinced herself.

“Comment peut-on prendre autant de tempspour une décision pareille?” she thought.

She felt frustrated.
“C’est pas possible.” Just take it, or not.

She took a deep breath.
“C’est pour une bonne cause,” she repeated to herself.

She picked up the money.
Shamelessly.

“Someone may die if I don’t take them.”

She put the 50 euro in her banana bag.

Kamille didn’t feel like running anymore.
She had a nasty feeling.

But
She ignored it.
And went home.
