Friction – Chapter Eight.
The days were endless, and the heat was growing. Time was halting. I watched the kids playing in the sand with their parents. Leur joie inconnue. Leur amusement inéprouvé –Their joy unknown. Their untested amusement. Ample sufficiency. Copious rest. Plenty of ice cream. And the end is still so far away.
I watched a dad splashing his little boy with fountain water. The kid giggled. Good for you, little one, I thought. At least your time measurement is still juvenile. Enjoy it as much as you can. Then, I glanced at his father.Shouldn’t he feel this, too?
The infinite daylight. Cette misère de chaleur. Cet ennui éternel– This misery of heat. This eternal boredom.
You slept properly. You worked enough. You played happily. And the sun won’t budge. Don’t you feel this?
How much will you swim, read a book on the beach, or have your cold iced tea?
*Je sollicite le soleil aussi.
Est-ce que tu es jaloux?
Égoïste?
Ou bien c’est la terre qui est coupable?*
Can’t you let go?
Whoever is torturing us.
Or just me.
We should invent a new concept.
“Éterner.”
Its definition would be: “Passer la saison d’été dans un endroit tempéré.”
I looked at the joy around me
infected.
Went on my way, dragging my misery and my egocentricity.
